Lotus Memories (small sample)

The man sat at the bar, drunk. One in the afternoon was brimming with heat, city streets turned to melted sap. The bar was dark and cool, tucked in an unremarkable corner slot in the shadow of a city bank. Passing in and out all day, no residents of the bank had glanced sideways at the tiny door. It had the feeling of being unremarkable, but that is what the bar’s clientele preferred. When one wishes to escape the world, they may find themselves in all types of locals such as this one. Small cracks filled with sand, filtering out the truly lost. Small cracks filed down those stronger desired states into just the basics. Drinking at two in the afternoon was simple when one had ceased worrying about the ramifications.

So two becomes three and six and nine, the man sat without fully draining one glass before ordering another. It was always the first Tuesday of the month which hurt the most. By luck or design the bar had no windows, so the hole became the void and the void did not permit memories to pass through its walls. When the bar had been closed two Tuesdays ago on account of the snow, the day had been impossible to grind out, spitting the man out the other side of the dark damp night.

That night two Tuesday’s ago. The streets had been completely drained, glowing under the falling sky and lamp light. The man had faithfully wandered to the bar, only to be met with a locked door. With no windows it was impossible to know if anyone was still inside, on days like this one the bar owner could still be found laying in one of the booths, left over from the night before. Pounding on the door a few minutes passed before the man turned back to the street. Empty eyes fell on the empty street, submitting to the snow which fell in large flakes onto his bald head he looked up at the bank. It was unremarkable, glass and black metal. People still moved behind the walls, diligently punching away even as the bar, and the rest of the city, rested in preparation for the frosted wind. They were kept warm and working inside the cold facade, each person blurred into one shapeless form. It was unnerving watching them, silent and mechanical. A women passed by on the second floor, admiring the falling snow out the window before her eyes shot down to the man, locking directly into his.

The eyes of the women were lotus petals in the pool of glass. Warm, trees bloomed vivid and full of fresh fruits, it was freshly spring supple with new beginnings and forgetting. The memories hadn’t come with him this time, there had never been a day of fighting the loss, the death rattling scream of his little girl was merely a shrieking laugh. There was no such Tuesday when his life had become a dark pit from which there was no relief, trees flowed with floral rebirth. The sun spent

Conversation with the Cat - (small sample)

Girl - What does it mean to be still?

Cat - It is that special part of life that is ignored by most. Doing and preoccupation

is easy. To busy the mind with a task or a distraction keeps thoughts away, stops

the mind from feeling and thinking about the life which one is experiencing. There

is a certain difficulty to stillness, to let the world skip by like a rabbit in the field;

with out following, you simply allow it to run on. To be still is to practice that part

of nature that is being.

Girl - But what of doing? I can’t help but be pulled by distractions, any all those

parts of life, others and the act of going and seeing.

Cat - Of course there is time for both, but there is no better than here. Life has a

way of consistency, it is the same for all creatures, whether you stay here or chose

to chase the world, you may find you struggle with the same questions, the same

act of not knowing.

Girl - But the world is out there, how can I learn of the world if I do not go and

experience it for myself?

Cat - The world is all around you, no matter where you are. I have never seen the

great sights or met many different people, yet I am them. Most often, searching

for answers outside the self leads to more more questions within. Seeing and

believing you know the lives of others is circular, you still do not know yourself

until you find the time to be still and to discover that individual soul you hold. The

others are just a lake reflecting onto you.

Girl - Yet it feels like a waste of the so-little, precious time to simply sit around.

Cat- You can never waste your time, for your life is yours. If you should choose to

use it making money or getting high, this is your bidding. However, what may be a

waste is if you never find fulfillment though those things, and the truth most find is

that you will not.

When you have spent your life seeking the external, in the end you may come

to realize you never knew what it is you wanted. Rather that you performed, be it

for yourself or the people, you acted as you supposed you should, acquired what

you believed you desired, or acted in accordance with what others told you you

should want to do. This may hurt you more deeply than any other act you commit,

to deject the inner world, and end up empty. That is why time to understand the

self, which comes with stillness is the least waste of time I can imagine.

Girl - I can understand, however when I find the time to be still, to think of these

supposed soul deep desires, the questions trample and flow with no end. It is a

trap to be still, passivity may lead to madness!

Cat - Do you fear yourself? Do you shy away from those difficult to ask questions,

hide in a world of colorful distractions and endless daydreams?

Girl - Oh, I don’t like to think so, but I suppose when the world overwhelms with

vague questions which only give way to arbitrary answers, it is easier to ignore the

whole thing all together. What is it worth knowing if the truth is so ugly and

depressing? Maybe the distractions of life keep this at bay, maybe that is reasonenough.

Cat - You shall never be satisfied by those frivolous parts of life, the soul demands

attention. Life will leave you the questions, whether you contemplate the meaning

or not; there will never be enough to distract the mind for the condition set onto

you by the universe. Let yourself be full of questions, and learn to let go of the

fear you hold of discovering the answers.

Girl- So how then? How can I learn this “way of stillness”? How did you master

passivity?

Cat - I can teach you to practice stillness, but you must embrace passivity in your

own way. Suppose you are me, for I am a simple house cat. I may not be plagued

by your complex human responsibilities, however this leaves my time free to learn

stillness, and gives my mind an open meadow to ponder on all the true questions

of life. This may be your first step, to let go.

Rid yourself of these monotonous tasks and worries which burden you

constantly. Think not of your finances nor your physical pleasures. All those

confusing relations to others and questions on the way the future may unfold, or

why the past happened in the way it did. Steady your mind to your present

moment, give away troubles to what you hear, what you can see around you,

grounded by the physical sensation of the heavy chair you sit on. Let your mind

melt off the outside world and find physical stillness.

This task is the hardest to achieve, for the world moves and desire to engage

is most times irresistible. But just for a moment, try.

Now you may begin to simply watch. See that bird flying over, or the way the

leaves dance in the sunlight on the wind. Appreciate the beauty which is most

present to you, for nature is in a constant state of wonder. Show gratitude for this

beauty, then you may begin to feel. Do not resist the rush, let it over come you.

Cry, be the emotion, you may find that you are closest to yourself when you do not

withhold against the natural swell.

Without your emotions, you work against yourself. If you have physical pain,

ignoring your aliments can only cause the suffering to last longer. Our minds are

often able to reject feeling, but by allowing this block you only prolong some

buried expression. Permit yourself. Be a stone in the flow, passing over and around

you, to be carved smooth until that constant river simply slides over without

resistance.

Now your are ready to be still.

Girl - Life is overwhelming, how can one person be tasked with so much? I do feel

like a stone, but I’m sinking, drowning in the tide.

Cat - Ah, but you are not. Life is full, but that is its nature. You shall learn to bear

the weight, until one day it shall lift. We hold onto everything, people and

mistakes, you will allow it to wear u down and brittle your bones. By the time you

are still young you could be carrying so much, you let your own will crush you.

Understand that your life happens in each moment, if you clutch onto the past or

worry for your future, what is there left to run your hands across the grasses

around you. Why hold so much heaviness? Choose to be light.Girl - You say to be a stone, now you're telling me to float. Which is it? Don’t

contradict yourself, say what you mean.

Cat - I have, be both. Duality is the way of the universe, for some days it rains,

then the sun shines. The forest needs both to grow. Imagine yourself a water lily,

you bob on the surface, yet your roots anchor you to the bottom of your spirit. It is

possible, to find the balance for nature does it all the time. A lesson in stillness is

to let nature be your guide. You find yourself here surrounded by the great forest

of ancient lands. The perfect place to observe and understand the influx of the

earth, let her show you the way to being.

Girl - I am confused, you have lost me among these trees.

Cat - Then you have found yourself at a thousand cross roads. Sit here in the

fallen leaves and needles with the ants and the rodents, be still; all which is

scrambled will unravel here.

Girl- I do not even know how to begin… What questions come first?

Cat - You have already begun, and your first question has been asked. As the

world turns so should you, even when you find stillness, the universe is in motion,

suddenly you have found time to feel that subtle movement.

Cat - You will see by the end what I have meant. Give yourself a try. It is a life’s

work to attempt to know the self and dig caverns to, as you very well put, arbitrary

answers of those “questions”.

Do not feel discouraged or frustrated, for it may take time before the sitting

stops feeling like work, until it becomes peace. This is the hardest part of life, until

it becomes a piece of you. Everything in time, and here you are with months

stretching head of you. Have time and nature heal you, be patient with the process

for it takes all summer for the wildflowers to bloom. I shall see you in a few

months, when the lichen has grown over your skin, and you will know stillness.

BAD POETRY READING, the satrical act of writing and reading a poem, should one always believe that performed art must be taken to be meaningful, or is it just another thing that makes no sense. The Bad Poetry reading is a satire event allowing all people to express their most obvious emotions through dumb metaphors and nonsense,

Forward (upcoming manuscript)

This short collection is a brief glance sideways, back, forward, and down. It is the

understanding through a hybrid post-apocalyptic word strings where we are going and the

questioning of why. The collection of these writings is the attempt at exploring what has

conditioned us in the dream reality we find ourselves in and if it ever mattered to care at all.

Why are we stumbling our way through the dark, when we have learned over and over how

to burn a fire, turn on the light. The precipice of the modern era is coming to a peak, over

the cliff is only the straight shot down, and in no way should the words in this collection be

seen as anything other then a cautionary tale and a cry for help. Humanity holds the

capacity for something far more then the simple minded ‘make and do’ we have come to

know our world to be. We must think and create to escape off our path, yet it seems the

cycle is never ending. Most are frustrated, confused, and overwhelmed by this reality,

rightfully so it is a nightmare. In many ways, the cycles are our nature and we must be

reminded again how to become; and as we merge with technology and alternate states web

into ourselves our human quality. From dreaming into being, from walking to stepping we

must find a way to be intentional with the world we create, and these writings may be in

part the attempt to call in those answers through observation and asking the question.

History has been spent fighting off the world, man should not give up now because screens

have clogged very pore in our minds from connecting back to life and its nature. Refocus

and reread. One should not pretend to understand how the cycles move, but watch the

moon and know that light shines goes dark and returns. On the brink of a new world, are

we retiring to the light, or digging deeper into shadow.
